The essential ingredients for any well-designed digital control panel

Digital control panels allow you to manage utilities and features of wastewater treatment facilities and pumps. They consist of a variety of settings, options for user interface, display and the like. These panels need to be put together correctly in order to work properly.

Today, we’re going to talk about the importance of digital control panel design and the three things that are most important about it. Let’s jump right in!

Component layout

Components shouldn’t simply be mish-mashed into a panel and left to whatever. They need to be organized in both a functional and logical way. Power activation and high use components should be up top. Lower power components that have a lower voltage level should be down low. There should be breakers for power levels to the left as well with things remaining consistent, Organized and reflecting the hierarchy of the components themselves.

This seems silly but you’d be amazed at the number of panels we encounter that have poor, little or no labeling whatsoever. Labeling is a crucial component of a well-designed panel because without it you don’t know what’s going to where. Wires need to be labeled correctly as well as not all systems are the same. Wiring should always be labeled with a syntax that corresponds with the PLC address. Supplies breakers and other components should be labeled with abbreviated prefixes that identify them.

Panel Sizing

A good control panel should have proper spacing between components both horizontally and vertically. The more horizontal space will allow you to add terminals, distributions breakers, PLC rack and the like. Vertical space is used for organizing wiring. The additional spacing will also help to minimize component crowding and heat concentration – which can add a lot of wear and tear to your panels and their long term health.

Digital control panels are remarkable inventions – but they need to be designed correctly for you to get the most out of them.
